Young musicians are challenging assumptions about what jazz can be, and bringing in stylistic influences from hip-hop, soul, and even EDM. These are ten of the best semi-recent jazz albums, and they will change your life

8. BADBADNOTGOOD, BBNG2
BADBADNOTGOOD cannot be stopped. This Toronto based trio of musicians is ostensibly a jazz combo, but their drums and piano are often so distorted that it sounds more like instrumental hip-hop. They are equal parts J Dilla and Ornette Coleman, creating challenging and abrasive jazz from songs borrowed from Kanye West, James Blake, and Tyler, the Creator. To call these songs covers would be to understate how truly weird they are. They’re almost unrecognizable. In one case, BBNG stretches out Kanye’s “Flashing Lights” to seven minutes and layers out furious piano runs that on first listen seem to evince hostility towards the instrument not heard since Jerry Lee Lewis. These are jazz musicians you would not want your kids around.

Love these kids from Toronto. It's great to see them get more recognition

Very much in fashion, so hopefully they'll get more attention.

I first heard them around 2011 or so, doing hip-hop covers as a jazz trio, like Electric Relaxation by Tribe Called Quest. Then they ended up getting the gig for Coachella as the house band for the hip-hop tent. Really talented kids

this is the one that hooked me

It's given me the idea for a top 5 stress relieving records(for me at least, that Van one is always no 1, if I'm playing that.......it's probably not a very good day.....or else I'm seriously hungover  )

1. Van Morrison "No Guru..."
2. Miles Davis "Sketches Of Spain"
3. David Bowie "low".......well, the second half anyway
4. Max Richter "Memory House"
5. Pink Floyd " Wish You Were Here"

What an annoying ASS. Walk into a place like this and immediately start giving everyone a hard time. Good plan, shithead.

Too bad you missed him, Siegal-- it would have been fun to see the two of you lock horns!

Our set lists for tomorrow's show. The venue typically draws a classic country/classic rock crowd. We go roughly by the list though we often swap from the bonus list if requested, the crowd dictates it, or the mood hits. Some lovely stuff there, Nirvana, Radiohead and Jimi, and Eric Clapton for that part of the evening to waddle about the dance floor in drunken stupor with a handful of bum.
