Hahaha, my goodness. That's food for a lot of stories right there, Mika.

I started to play this week again.
I've already played more, then the last 2 years counted together.

Yep, I stopped a while. The truth is, I feared for my hearing, and the vibes is a loud instrument. Anyway I grabbed my courage a couple of months ago, and went to an ear-specialist. He said there is nothing wrong with my hearing (except age).
To be on the safe side, I got some personal fitting earplugs.
And now the schoolyear, and working season is over, I started again.

When Rudiger heard how heavy my earplugs dimmed the sound, he thought it was going to be too much. But I asure you, I'm verry happy with them so far.

greetz,

I love my custom-fit earplugs. They cut the sound by 15db and I'm sure they've saved me a lot of hearing damage by now. And the sound quality is very good.

Glad you got some too :)

greetz,

Excellent to hear you've found something that works for you, welcome back to playing again

That's great, vibesman. Glad you got yourself earplugs. One of the best investments I've made.

This started out with me just recording a riff (I don't even know if that's the right word), putting bass and drums to it, and then singing gibberish. When I started writing the lyrics I kept the rhythm of the gibberish and fit the lyrics to it. They turned out to be some strange stream of consciousness words, partly inspired by vocal sounds in my gibberish. I'll write a translation below if anyone's interested. Have no idea what it all means, but it was fun to sing.

The toughest part of this recording was keeping the bass string going with my thumb, while playing the rest of the cords with my other fingers. On two guitars!

The title Packa pappas kappsäck (Pack daddy's knapsack) is a classic Swedish tongue twister. Try saying it fast, many times in a row: Pahckah pahppahs kahppseck

Translation:

It starts with a scream and a bloody bed
And ends with a moan

Be a good student, learn all about math
so you know what to do when you negotiate your salary

You thought you got rid of them when you grew up
But no matter how you try, they know where you live

Take off all your clothes, stand up on a stage
some will throw roses, others will throw rocks

Gather all the children
Pack daddy's knapsack
Clean off the towns' last disgrace (This is untranslatable. It refers to a Swedish childrens' song as well as the Swedish word "skamfläck" which literally means "stain of shame")
Hurry children, hurry
Pack daddy's knapsack
There's a light in the tunnel, it's a burning tire

Now that they have made you a king again
You have to do what you were born for
Imagine you're a falling leaf
imagine you're a roaring river

Stagger home at dawn, not looking where you're going
Red light, green light, push the pedal and drive

Don't get left behind on the quay, don't stand there alond
remember that this ship is unsinkable

Gather all the children
Pack daddy's knapsack
Crawl into the closet and fight your claustrophobia
Hurry children, hurry
Pack daddy's knapsack
Of course they will survive, it was just a boyish prank

Gather all the children
Pack daddy's knapsack
Wave goodbye from a gleaming spaceship
Hurry children, hurry
Pack daddy's knapsack
Pack a passport and some money and don't forget a blind man's cane

The words seem so dark, yet the music sounds upbeat. Mikale, you are a study in contrasts!

Inspired by Daniel McGeehan's album Tin Fiddle, where McGeehan plays everything including percussion, on one single instrument, I'm now trying to record a song using only my resonator guitar. We'll see if something listenable will be the result...

"His voice is like melted butt hair."

Misheard praise of someone we know and love's original music, and the nicest thing no one has ever said to me.

As to what I'm playing at the moment, here's a clip of a new song that we debuted at a gig last week:

Fun stuff, great (non) quote. Right up there with "Goose farts on a muggy day"

So here's the result of my experiment with playing all the sounds on my Epiphone Resonator. I'm not sure it's completely successful. A little thin maybe, could use some bass. And as usual I can't resist putting all sorts of vocal and instrumental harmonizing on there (with some welcome help from my colleague's daughter), so in the end it might be a little pointless. I should sometimes listen to the voice saying, "less is more"...

The title "Pappa jag vill åka en gång till" translates as "Daddy, I want to ride it one more time". While this might sound a bit dirty in English there are no such double meanings in the Swedish language. It's simply a child whining when the fun is over. And a symbol for wanting to live your life again. Anyway, it's the usual Mikalebrug depressing lyrics dealing with the last day of your life, or the end of the world if you prefer.. :P

It's the very last day
after your very last night
it's the very last time
you yell at your cat

Savour emptying the dishwasher
and tying your shoes
this day is much shorter than you think

The lights are going out
the carousels have stopped spinning
Daddy, I want to go one more time

You'll get no more cotton candy
no matter how much you want it
Daddy, I want to go one more time

You'll the neighbor's babbling
and the neighbor's ugly dog
If you could do your root canal one more time
you would enjoy every minute of it

Look at that spot on the wallpaper
How long has that been there?
It looks like someone whose name you've forgotten
but you remember being in love

The lights are going out
the carousels have stopped spinning
Daddy, I want to go one more time

You'll get no more cotton candy
no matter how much you want it
Daddy, I want to go one more time

Nice lyrics. I'm at work as ballot officer, so I can't listen at the moment. (So, if I did play this, how would it influence the voters, that's the question of the day.)

I suppose if I listen I'll hear the lyrics in Swedish?
