Rogue one, with Darci.
Much better than the sequels of course, but left me a little cold, didn't like many of the characters apart from the blind would be Jedi. He also provided a funny spark when he was hooded in the kidnapping scene.
It also goes to show they still have some way to go until CGI human faces don't look ridiculous.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close...

At first I thought, oh na, a film with both Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks, two of what you'd call "not my favourite actors", but WHAT A FILM...

Very intense and highly emotional from start to finish.
Both Bullock and Hanks have supporting roles in this film...

leading star, Thomas Horn, was about 15 years old when this film came out, fabulous performance!

Highly recommended...

Saw Rogue One in the cinema yesterday.

I thought it was OK, there were parts of it I enjoyed and other parts that didn't really grab me.

I didn't like the blind jedi that much, Stephen. I thought he was too much of a cliché.

I've been to the cinema quite a lot lately, seeing Arrival a few weeks ago. Very good film. Then I saw The Rules for Everything on Tuesday, which was weird and fun and I liked most of it. Tomorrow I'm going again to see Toni Erdmann.

The trailer for The Rules is a nice little poetic piece:

I love this movie. Always have. There's something so bleak about it. My favorite scene being by the lake in the snow. Looking out on pretty much nothing at all.
Also: I put a spell on you.
Always. Love it.

It's been so long since I was that. I should watch it again. Jarmusch has a new film just around the corner, Paterson. I'm looking forward to it.

Toni Erdmann was a lot of fun. Interesting film. Consider it recommended.

I love Stranger than Paradise too...... In fact.. Jarmusch in general..

I do recommend Patterson too if you get the chance.. A gentle unassuming film about day to day life in small-town America.. Beguiling

That's Lake Erie, right here in my hometown! :D Stranger Than Paradise has always been a favorite of mine, partly because it was filmed in Cleveland.

I saw Paterson recently and heard some people complaining afterwards in the lobby that it was "too slow".... but I liked it because it showed how an ordinary working person could make his life feel extraordinary by observing and writing about his life and the people around him.

Love Jim Jarmusch! Need to see Paterson!

Saw the new Aki Kaurismäki film 'Other Side Of Hope', opening night last Friday, went to see it with my younger daughter, a fellow cinephile.

Quite liked it, no surprises there, heh. As expected very akiesque, laconic deadpan humour in the mix with a rather serious refugee theme. He actually filmed quite a bit of this here in the neighbourhood, some scenes just across the road from Casa Mood. Was a nice bonus watching it from our balcony, hah.

Suppose this will be on distribution around Europe shortly, starting with the Berlin Film Festival.

Mr Mood!!!! How wonderful to see you! [hug]

And a new Kaurismaki film coming out, too? I'll look forward to that!

I watched Death in Venice yesterday, with a bunch of author colleagues. They had a projector and a canvas, and there were ten of us attending the event (which also included free beer and wine).

Everyone was completely quiet during the film, and immediately afterwards we had a long and very good discussion about different aspects of it.

Very good film, and a wonderful event all in all. Makes me appreciate being part of a social circle like that.

Years ago I was fascinated with Death in Venice, both the book and the film version, but I haven't seen or read it in many years. It would be wonderful to revisit it in the circumstances you've described, with a group of interested people to discuss it with. Lucky you!

What a wonderful way to experience a movie!

We watched Red Beard last night. Another Kurasawa great. So enjoyable it hardly seemed epic at all, apart from the intermission, that was epic.
