Just saw Paterson in the cinema.
Loved it!

There's absolutely nothing happening for two hours and it's captivating.

Watched Lemony Snickets A Series Of Unfortunate Events movie. Jim Carey was good in it, as were the kids and the supporting cast. Then went on to view some of the series on Netflix. Oh dear.. The narrator is lifeless, as is Doogie Howser playing Olaf.

Saw Jackie in the cinema last week. A little meh.
Very stylish, Portman is good as Jackie, but the movie is too distant. Too cold.
I failed to connect.

I've been to the cinema to see a few films lately, in connection with a film festival that I happened to get a free festival pass to.

On Wednesday I saw Hidden Figures, about some black women working for NASA in the early sixties. It's a very important and interesting story, most certainly, but ... a little too sentimental in parts for me. Too much Hollowood or something. But I suppose they have to do it like that to appeal to the masses, and if that's what it takes to get such an important story out, I'd say it's worth it. I was cringing in my seat at a proposal scene and the person next to me was wiping tears. Oh well, we're all different, I suppose.

Yesterday I watched The Hippopotamus, based on the Stephen Fry novel. It was fun, and thankfully they'd left out the very thing that might have made me cringe (the ugly old man, main character, getting the beautiful young woman he was drooling at). The main character, Roger Allam, was wonderful.

Moonlight..

The story of a young African American man and his coming of age, presented as three stages in his life.. and played by three different actors.
‘from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami.’

A stunning film.. very moving.. Contender for film of the year..

Buster Keaton, 100 years in film. :notworthy:

"One day my dad looked at me and said 'son, you better get into show business, 'cause with a face like that you'll never get a job any place else."

100 years ago on this date the genius that is Buster Keaton made his debut in front of the camera. The rest as they say is history. One of my biggest celluloid heroes, simply love his work!

Here's a cavalcade of his stunts, he did those himself:

A date worth celebrating! Thank you, Mr Mood!
I have adored Buster since I first saw him in The General when I was 11 years old. It's still one of my all-time favorite movies.

The kids and I all watched "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy for the first time. Have you heard of those? They're alright, worth watching at least...

We just watched the first part with my youngest daughter last weekend. I'm reading the books for her.
It's a lengthy project, doesn't really read all that easy, especially, perhaps, in Dutch.
She enjoys it, but find it hard to focus at times. Too many names of folks, elves, dwarves, rivers, mountains, etc.
Watching the movie spiked her interest, for sure!

I love the movies.
Not sure I will ever read the books again, though, when done.

Interestingly, of all the books, I found The Hobbit to be far more enjoyable than the trilogy. You might consider giving that a go. It's a tad bit lighter, both in length (obviously) and tone. I liked all of them, but I know what you mean; the language can be a bit tedious at times. Not exactly a leisurely read.

Yes, we're done with the Hobbit already.
It's indeed an easier read.

Not that the trilogy is bad, not at all, but it's hard to keep focus at times.
I think the screenplay writers did a damn good job in filtering out things which were not necessary to keep the flow going for the movies.

"Chucked ring in volcano"

All we needed.

Watched Roman holiday again the other day, a beautiful classic.
