You all know the lyrics to Earth Died Screaming:

There was thunder, there was lightning
Then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky
It rained mackerel, it rained trout

My favorite author seems to have lifted something from my favorite songwriter. Coincidence, you say? I find that hard to believe. There is a very memorable scene in Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami where it rains Mackerel without any explanation.

Can you think of any artists who borrowed imagery from Tom Waits?

Kafka on the Shore is a phenomenal book by the way. How can you not like a story where Johnnie Walker is a villain and Colonel Sanders is a helpful benefactor/pimp?

I love that book too, especially that scene where it rains maquerel.

Just started this one a couple days ago about a hundred pages into it and the fact that theres some sort of Tom Waits reference makes me love it even more! (Still have no idea what the fuck is actually going on, but that's par for the course with Murakami.)
