Martin Halla performed Tom Waits' Take It With Me in the finals of Norwegian The Voice. Needless to see he won the whole thing, and he has one of the best voices I've ever heard on shows such as this - and also in general.

Enjoy!

EDIT: Sound quality is not too good.

Am I a bad person if I don't really dig this?

I mean, it's great that Tom gets exposure through shows such as this one, but I don't really like this guy's voice or the composition he's singing in over.

Several of my Facebook friends were raving about this, and when I heard it was a Waits song I went to the website and listened.

I find it too polished and uninteresting. He does have a good voice, but ... this just doesn't grab me.

Good voice, it shows the beauty of the melody, but not enough soul behind it.

Souls are overrated! Do animals have souls? According to Buddha, there is no "soul" or "self" in the traditional sense.

80%...

PS: Sorry, Melisma!

I'd been wondering why I had a bunch of comments this weekend on the "Take Me Home" youtube video. Apparently the titles are close enough... upon looking at the stats there is a 1500% viewership increase from Norway in the last couple of days. Between this in Norway and the dance show in Poland, 14 of the last 15 youtube comments I got were on "Take Me Home" and "Temptation"... ah, the power of European television

My opinion of the cover, well... the arrangement is appalling. His voice is OK. But it doesn't make me feel a thing. Kind of mechanical. I'm sure if you were watching the show it was a breath of fresh air, though :)

Don't lie to me, George, I know you're not sorry one bit! :P

Okay, okay, there's not enough feeling behind the song. Is that a more acceptable phrase? Even animals have feelings!

Yeah, I was going to post about this, saying I knew the reason if you got more comments on this song. But never got around to it, and now you know anyway.

I was thinking, when I watched this, no matter what voice you have, how much feeling/soul/whatever you have, the arrangements are probably all boring by default and the finished experience will suffer from it.

The funny thing is that it's not the same song! "Take Me Home" vs. "Take It with Me" ... I don't have a version of this song on youtube, I don't think. I looked at a couple of other popular TW ones I have up, and there was a bit of a bump from Norway for all of them, but nowhere near "Take It With Me".

To me, the original shines because it is so intimate, and personal, and homey... so vulnerable. Having saccharine music swelling in the background while trying to show off what a great voice you have just doesn't work as a concept, I think. Feels like they are trying to force 50-year-old Tom's songs into 30-year-old Tom's music.

Of course we're not, Pascal.

I find it unlikely that these programs could ever provide me with music that would grab me.

How's your swear jar doing, by the way?

Yeah, I noticed. But this, I did not foresee.
