harp wise, you need a cheap ass mic going into a small tube guitar amp. trust me.

True that. Any dynamic mic with a quarter inch jack into an Epiphone Valve Junior will sound great.

best harmonica mic I've ever used is a WWII era electrovoice m-43 military issue mic. Got it for $12 at a surplus store, and for any other purpose it sounds like shit, but you get a kickass natural distortion which, run through a Fender Blues DeVille, sounds like the devil. hands down the coolest harp tone I've ever heard.

OAB, seems you never did get a proper answer. The harp Charlie uses on Chocolate jesus is Bb played in 3rd position. Very tough stuff. I have been trying to emulate the inflections in that song for months. When I finally get it I'll be one very happy guy. Break it down into small bits and try to play the same notes. Long car rides seem to help me.
Best of luck!

classic banjo style is odd because all of the fretting is based on patterns or "rolls" that the picking hand is doing, never could find the time for all that. I have one that I beat on occasionally but mostly just finger picking styles that I use on the guitar

great harmonica tips, but i think its safe to say most of us will never sound like Musslewhite. Got to see him once at a small town ballpark outside of Santa Fe back in the 90's.

Well, seems that I'm extremely late to this party,
However,

My searches regarding Charlie's excellent work on "Chocolate Jesus" have Me more bewildered than informed.

As far as I can discern.
Charlie is using a "Low Harp", not a standard tuning.
Now which key is it ?

Well Charlie is most definitely playing cross harp. Third position ? Unlikely.
Fifth ? Possibly.

Which make ?
Well Charlie openly endorses Seydel. Always has. So a Seydel it must be.

Then, the penny drops for me.......
"Dear Seydel........"

Except, emailing Seydel is a "right old kerfuffle", so.....
I just emailed a music supplier here in Great Britain from whom I purchased My Snail 598 Ebony Tenor Ukulele last autumn (it's a terrific piece of kit !!) they stock Seydel.......

More news, when it is confirmed.
Take Care.

Go easy on Me, this is My first posting here.
Regards,
Blu-Tone
